Well, “Sticks,” one of the stories in this book, is where those things come from. And it is only one small sign of the influence of legendary author and editor Karl Edward Wagner. Wagner was a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, and many of his best stories—particularly the early ones—are steeped in. “Sticks” 1974 by Karl Edward Wagner Illustrated by Lee Brown Coye. Originally published in 1974 in Whispers Magazine, and a winner of the British Fantasy Award, this story is considered by archivists and madmen to be canonical Mythos, and to my inner eye could easily have been penned by Lovecraft himself with its vague otherworldly shifts and bleak upstate New York setting.

When reading the recent novel The Fisherman by John Langan I couldn’t help but think of the Quabbin Reservoir and the towns (and possibly cultist structures!) that were buried by the flooding.
